Until not so very long ago Lucien lived in a treetop village with the rest of his elven clan. It was a simple and secluded life, and he would have been quite content to stay there indefinitely.

Unfortunately for him, it was not to be. A party of humans on some quest or other came lumbering through his beloved homelands, singing raucously and flattening the underbrush in their wake. They made camp, lit a fire, cooked their meat and drank their ale, talking long into the night. Lucien and his clan drew back among the leaves, both hiding from them and keeping watch over them.

In the morning, the humans struck camp. However, due to either residual ale in their bloodstream, or pure stupidity, they failed to properly extinguish their fire before lumbering on their merry way. Lucien barely had time to react before his home, his entire village was in flames.

He escaped the house with only the short sword that he had been wearing on his belt and his grandfather's longbow which had been, as always, resting ready near the door. There was nothing that could be done for his house. The only choice he had time to make, was between leaving with his life, and risking his life to go back and aid his twin brother.

To Lucien's eternal shame, it is almost certain that Helios perished in the fire as Lucien ran to save himself.

Lucien's companion creature, the cougar Mara, has been with him from the moment she was old enough to leave her mother. The two of them have grown together, and she, along with his bow and his sword, is Lucien's only tie back to his old life. Now he and Mara travel, stopping where they please, staying but a few days in any one place and always moving forward. The latest decision Lucien made - and perhaps the decision that will save him from his increasingly reckless ways - was to board a caravan with various other misfits.
